A Morning Routine

Consistency!

It doesn’t matter if you are old and broken (like me), or a high school track athlete. Paying attention to the details required for world domination is a daily thing.  You really should get up ten minutes earlier to work on your own details just to wake up your body.  Remember that whole “breakfast” thing?  You are breaking your fast (not eating) from your sleep cycle and fueling for the day.  The same goes for having a morning exercise routine.  You really should get up a little earlier just to “wake up” your body from sleeping.  You pretty much stop moving throughout the night (ok, not totally, but you aren’t working out).  Your morning routine should be something so easy that you feel better, looser and warmed up and so simple that you want to do it again.  Don’t make it so long that you dread having to do a morning workout just as you wake up. The routine gets your body ready for the day. Essentially, working out the kinks of the previous day that always come back when you sleep. I have worked with high end athletes that have their own routine that they stick to every day!

For example, I have a morning routine that takes as long as it takes my coffee to brew. That’s it!  I absolutely feel 100 times better when I get my butt out of bed.  Foam rolling, a couple of low back exercises, closed chain fire hydrants (for my deep posterior hip stabilizers), double and single leg kneeling squats for my glutes and hamstrings, hip hikes and a reaching skater stretch.  All designed to support my low back, my hips and my hamstrings.  Once I bang those exercises out, my coffee is usually finished brewing and I can move to get ready to either workout or ride my bike.  Just from a 7-10 minute morning routine I have been able to push myself to be stronger, more stable and certainly more confident when I reach my target of riding up mountains. The same for anyone of any age.  Do you want to get faster? Do you want to have more endurance? You will be able to crush the will of your opponents!  In fact, this routine can be done at the end of school before you start your practices and competitions.  Don’t kid yourself.  You have been sitting around at school becoming brilliant, but you have been sedentary, your body is essentially asleep...all day! Just like waking in the morning, you have to get ready for your “day” of practice and competitions.  Then you join your team for the warm up, workouts and competitions.  If you don’t get yourself ready, you will not be tuned up, far less efficient, less mentally engaged and useless to your team.

So, get your ass out of bed and crush the day! Crush your opponents! Take an active role in your athletic performance and don’t just think you are the greatest.
